Luke 10:29-37 – A Good Samaritan

Probably two books were written in the first half of the first century. The work is anonymous, but still follows the author of Luke. Many scholars today agree that the author was a Syrian Antiochian and a companion of Paul. Luke wrote to Gentiles (non-Jews) who spoke Greek. Luke’s interpretation of this event was influenced by his desire to show what religion can do with Roman citizenship, i.e. how one can believe in Jesus and be loyal to the emperor at the same time. The writer painted an image of Jesus as a fulfillment of God’s promise to Israel. Promises were unexpectedly kept, including Jews and Gentiles, men and women, journalists and all who were expelled. This parable is unique to Luke and shows Luke the importance of Jesus’ character for the weak, here it is the Gentiles. This parable comes from a lawyer who tried to stop Jesus by testing his ability to interpret the Bible and present the human enigma of how to “live ‘forever’.” Jesus handed the question to the lawyer who spoke two Hebrew/Old Testament words of love as an answer.

The lawyer asked important questions: “Who is my neighbor? Matthew 22:34-40 and Mark 12:28-34 do not give this illustration. A similar discussion presents the two commandments of love, but begins with the question of which is the greatest commandment and which is the first commandment.

The lawyer’s attempts to prove his previous questions (verse 29) may show that he thinks he is stupid because he asked a question that he must answer for himself. Therefore, he asked for more details. The word “neighbor” here means “close”. This does not apply to everyone, and although Leviticus 19:18 generally addresses Jews, it does not promote love for everyone. Therefore, there is a good reason for a lawyer to ask for an explanation of the matter.

The word “metaphor” comes from the Greek word meaning “side by side”. Modern stories are based on spiritual truth. The parable has a meaning. These concepts are not intended to be specific and should not be interpreted as supporting the concept of morality. The theme of Jesus’ teaching is the kingdom of God, and the parable describes the kingdom of God.

The advocate will be the advocate of the Torah, the Jewish law which is considered a gift from God for the Jews to teach them how to live according to God. Lawyers with legal and religious affiliation are required to prove their authority and power to the masses and appear arrogant and dismiss Jesus’ words when the public attempts to arrest Jesus.

There is confusion in the way the lawyer rejects the word “Samaritan” and calls it “merciful” (verse 37). He may want to avoid the word and find that the text is not a problem, but the action is important!


Priests and Levites have always represented the nation of Israel.

After temple work, the priest returns home to the land (see Luke 1:23). Jericho was an important temple for the priests. The bride will go too far for the following reasons:

She was afraid of being harassed.
He believed that the man was dead and did not want to defile himself by touching him (Leviticus 21:1-3 specifies that the priest should not defile himself by touching the dead only for his relatives).
